Social Networking Site Guidelines

Best practices for social networking

The Web is not anonymous! Everything you write or post can be traced back to the University, and to you personally.

Use common sense and a code of ethics

Do you want to administer a social networking site?

*Ask your manager if you have any questions about what is appropriate.

Site security

Your social networking site should not be tied to any individual's e-mail address. Instead, use an organizational or "functional" e-mail address. Read more about site security and safety.

Conducting official U of M business on an "outside" site

Consult with your collegiate or departmental communications leaders before initiating any University business on an "outside" site to make sure that your efforts fit within a cohesive and consistent communications plan.

When using an outside site to conduct U of M business, don't use your personal University (umn.edu) e-mail address.
